Esdal College

Esdal College is a secondary school in the Emmen region of the Netherlands. The school's lighting system was due for an upgrade, primarily because it still used outdated fluorescent lighting, which had exceeded its lifespan. Lamp failures were a regular occurrence, which is unacceptable during lessons. The school has now fully transitioned to intelligent LED lighting using Thorlux's innovative SmartScan system.

The building had a mixture of aged light fixtures, complicating maintenance and repairs. For this reason, the project focused on using primarily the efficient Thorlux Hi-Style recessed luminaire with low-glare optics. By standardising the fixtures, maintenance has become much simpler and more efficient.

Replacing fluorescent lights with LEDs in combination with the SmartScan system has resulted in significant energy savings. Thorlux Lighting's SmartScan is a revolutionary wireless lighting control system that allows users to monitor energy consumption and the system's full operational status. SmartScan sensors detect the presence or absence of occupants and the level of natural daylight entering the space. When daylight is abundant, the lights automatically dim. On a sunny day, luminaires near windows will barely illuminate while those further inside the room will, resulting in consistent room lighting while maximising energy savings. This feature helps the school, where large windows allow plenty of natural light into the building. SmartScan also enables the programming of preset lighting scenes. These controls ensure the desired lighting at any time of the day. Every classroom has a discreet SmartScan scene plate, allowing teachers to adjust the lighting to suit the needs of the lesson.

Integrating SmartScan into the college building gives complete control over the lighting system.
