Fenner's Indoor Cricket School, University of Cambridge
Cambridge, United Kingdom
The University of Cambridge's Fenner's Indoor Cricket School is a three-lane indoor training facility that provides an exceptional cricket training option throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. With its high-performance training environment, Fenner's School provides an invaluable resource for students, local cricket teams, and local community members looking to improve their skills.

The Challenge
To maintain its reputation as a leading training facility, Fenner's Indoor Cricket School recently invested in upgrading its lighting system. The primary goal was to enhance visibility, player safety, and overall energy efficiency. The existing lighting installation was more than 20 years old and generally comprised linear fluorescents. Many luminaires in the hall were severely damaged due to the impact of cricket balls over the years and needed replacement. This was partially due to their mounting positions being close to the cricket nets.
The University of Cambridge’s Estates Division sought to install a lighting system to improve light uniformity, reduce energy consumption, and create a more engaging environment for players and coaches. Thorlux Lighting was selected to implement the lighting solution at Fenner's Indoor Cricket School.
The Solution
Thorlux surveyed the existing lighting and produced layout drawings and detailed calculations. Alternative mounting positions were considered to reduce impact risk and further calculations were undertaken. Ultimately, due to the location of structural steelwork, the decision was made to keep the existing lighting positions.
Thorlux Visio Sport luminaires were selected to light the play area. The Visio Sport is rated IK10 and complies with DIN EN 18032 Part 3 and DIN VDE 0710 Part 13 for ball impact resistance. Visio Sport offers superior light quality and durability, with even distribution that minimises glare and reduces eye strain for athletes. Thorlux provided a sample luminaire for impact testing to reassure site managers of its suitability for the application.
To provide emergency lighting in the play area, adjustable Duo-Spot luminaires and Lexi-65 emergency exit signs were fitted, using wire cages to prevent ball damage to these essential safety items. Elsewhere, Realta external luminaires were used to light the periphery of the building, with Jubilee linear luminaires in the entrance.
The installed lighting system also features Thorlux's advanced SmartScan wireless controls, enabling automatic adjustments in lighting levels based on activity, occupancy, and daylight availability. Facility managers can access real-time data on energy usage and optimise light settings accordingly. By using data-driven insights, Fenner's Indoor Cricket School can now adjust lighting levels based on usage patterns, maximising energy savings and extending the lifespan of the lighting fixtures.
The lighting upgrade has significantly improved visibility and overall lighting quality. The facility has also achieved substantial energy savings, with the new lighting system in the play area consuming approximately 71.5% less electricity than the previous setup. This project demonstrates the impact that high-quality lighting solutions can have in enhancing sports facilities and supporting athletic development.
